Average Guide for Daily Live‑Weight Gains (ADG)

Steers

  • At grass (2nd grazing season): 0.9 kg/day or higher (Teagasc target).
  • Dairy-beef steers (general targets): 1st grazing season: 0.7–0.8 kg/day, 1st winter: 0.6–0.7 kg/day, 2nd grazing season: 0.9–1.0+ kg/day
  • Young beef animals (general): Can gain ~1 kg/day on good grass alone.

Heifers

  • At grass (2nd season): 0.9 kg/day or higher (same as steers).
  • Dairy‑beef heifers (general targets): 1st grazing season: 0.7–0.8 kg/day, 1st winter: 0.6–0.7 kg/day, 2nd grazing season: typically around 0.9 kg/day, depending on breed and system

Young Bulls

  • Young beef animals can achieve ~1 kg/day on high‑quality grass. Typical Irish expectations: 0.9–1.3 kg/day, depending on breed, diet, and whether intensively finished.
